5 Best Reusable K Cups For Your Single Serve Coffee Machine

The average, disposable, single-use K-cups have their uses. I love them, and the army of flavors available is what brought me to Keurig. There’s great flavor and taste with K-cups, but can I do better?

Turns out, the answer is yes. I still enjoy the convenience and flavors of pods, but the best reusable K cup has a lead on usefulness. Reusable cups save money, reduce waste, and can even offer better tasting coffee.

I’ll admit it, saving money was a big draw. But the better taste is what sealed the deal.

Why Choose Reusable Filter Cups?

It Saves Money

The convenience of using single-use K-cups comes at a price. You spend more. Depending on how often you drink coffee, the money spent can be substantial. Compared to that, employing reusable K-cups is very economical.

In fact, on the basis of pricing per pound, you’re paying significantly more for single-use capsules. And that’s even when compared to some high-priced artisanal coffee brands available. Which brings me to the next point.

You Can Have Better Coffee

With reusable cups, you get to choose the coffee you drink. You don’t have to drink coffee that was ground up months ago and has been losing its freshness. Instead, you can grind your coffee as required, and enjoy a superior taste.

Even if you’re buying (relatively) expensive, artisanal coffee, there’s still a good chance you’re saving money over single-use cups.

Sure, single-use cups can bring lots of flavors to your palate. But, most of us usually stick to a single flavor for our regular cuppa. You can keep a few single-use cups around for that flavor you like, but you’ll find yourself turning to your reusable K cup for your regular coffee.

It Is Better For The Environment

The math is pretty simple. Single-use plastics contribute big time to the mountains of garbage troubling the world. The hundreds of single use cups you use every year add to that mountain of garbage. Using reusable cups helps reduce plastic waste.

Is My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter Compatible With My Coffee Maker?

Reusable K-Cups don’t usually take a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Before you buy a cup, take a look at the model number and name of your coffee maker.

Your purchase and the coffee maker should be compatible. While the popular options cover most models, it pays to be sure of compatibility between the cup and coffee maker.

5 Reusable K Cups For 2019

1. Keurig My K-Cup Universal Reusable Ground Coffee Filter

Keurig My K-Cup Universal Reusable Ground Coffee Filter

Let’s start with the reusable filter coming straight from the metaphorical horse’s mouth. Being “Universal”, the filter is designed for use with all Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 models. And yes, that includes Keurig Mini and Keurig Plus Series models.

The package includes an adapter for Plus Series models; remove it, and you can use the cup for Mini Series as well. All plastic components used in the filter are BPA free.

Two helpful lines/markings on the cup show the amount of coffee needed for a regular cup or a travel mug. The adapter also seems to be some source of confusion as several customers report having trouble setting up the cup with different models.

A large part of the confusion is that different configurations of the K-Cup Universal work with different Keurig coffee makers.

The K-Cup universal has three parts: the filter basket, lid, and filter holder. Further, the filter holder includes the Plus Series adapter. If you have a Classic series brewer, remove the Plus Series adapter. When using the Classic, you’ll also have to remove the pod holder assembly from the filter.

Things are easier with the Plus Size brewers, and you won’t have to make any changes, well, except making sure the Plus Size adapter is in place. Sure the process on either series isn’t too much work. Still, it might be more convenient to pick a filter that doesn’t need you to make any alterations.

I’d say this one works best for the Plus Series models. If you have something like the Mini, or Classic, it might be worthwhile to look into reusable cups designed specifically for your coffee machine.

2. DI ORO – MaxBrew 24K GOLD K-Cup Reusable Filter for Keurig 2.0/1.0

DI ORO - MaxBrew 24K GOLD K-Cup Reusable Filter for Keurig

Di Oro filter is a well-liked and popular reusable K-cup for your single-serve machine. The big draw here is the 24K Gold Purflow MaxBrew coffee filter. Its overly complicated name aside, the coffee filter certainly has proven its worth to consumers.

The company claims that the unique honeycomb structure of the filter helps give a better taste to coffee. The steel filter plated with 24K gold does not add its own taste to the ground coffee.

Plus, since it is made from metal, it doesn’t absorb any oils or otherwise interfere with the taste of your coffee. Now that’s a sweet deal.

Di Oro’s reusable filters are made from high quality materials. The cup is free from BPA, DEHP, and lead. It is also top rack dishwasher safe, so cleaning is a breeze.

FROZ-CUP 2 Refillable Reusable K Cups

One of the most loved and highly rated reusable K cups, Froz-Cup wins on versatility and ease of use. The economic price doesn’t hurt either. This cup uses a stainless steel micro mesh filter and is backed by a lifetime guarantee.

Claims like that certainly help to build an interest in the cup. Keep in mind, that the product will naturally degrade with use, the guarantee is a bit more nuanced.

Froz-Cup 2.0 has a specially designed lid built to withstand high temperatures. This certainly helps your coffee, it also gives you the freedom to brew other beverages like tea and hot chocolate. It is easy to work with and will fit into practically all compatible models without any need to make changes.

While it is a minor detail, I sort of enjoy the fish-styled design on the Froz-cup. It’s just something that stands out from the bland looks of most other filters. It is constructed from food-grade materials and is BPA-free and lead-free.

Keurig Reusable Filter FAQs

How to use reusable K cup?

Most reusable cups come with a full set of instructions to clarify their use. You may need to make some changes for universal cups, like the Keurig My K-Cup Universal Reusable Ground Coffee Filter. The small changes you’ll have to make are of course what makes this K cup “universal”.

It will work with most coffee makers without trouble. However, for Plus Series brewers, be sure to add the included adapter at the bottom. Also, remember to use coarse ground coffee; fine ground coffee can clog the filter.

How much coffee do you put in a reusable K-Cup?

Reusable K-Cups come with lines to mark the maximum amount of coffee that you can add. As long as you’re below the maximum limit, the amount of coffee grounds you add is dependent on how strong you want your coffee. For the standard measurements, but two tablespoons for every six-ounce cup.

Can you use Keurig pods twice?

Conventional Keurig pods are single serve and should not be used twice. If you want multiple uses out of your pods, get a reusable K cup. It’s a better option than cajoling your machine into using an already spent pod.

Can I use regular coffee in a Keurig?

Yes. Using a reusable K cup gives you the freedom of adding the coffee grounds of your choice. You can fill it up with regular coffee, or better, use freshly ground coffee for a delicious cuppa.

How many times can you use a K cup?

A single serve Keurig pod should not be used more than once. A reusable K cup, on the other hand, can be used multiple times. Many reusable cups can be used 20 times, though they can last longer. You can use the cup as long as its filter is undamaged and its shape is intact.

Do you need filters for reusable K cups?

Many reusable cups employ metallic mesh filters that are a part of the cup’s body. Using an additional filter is not necessary. Though if you prefer, you can use paper filters designed for reusable cups.

Can You Make Your Own K Cups?

You shouldn’t. People often suggest ‘hacks’ that will make it possible to reuse coffee pods or create your own cups. It’s a risky exercise that can be more trouble than it is worth. Commercially available reusable filters are economical and should be the preferred choice.

Are reusable K cups safe?

Yes. Be sure to buy your reusable K cups from a reputable brand and store. Your K cup should be free from BPA, Lead, and DEHP. Responsible companies don’t include such chemicals in their consumer products. Buying from a reputable source and brand is a logical choice.

Buying Keurig Reusable Filter And Cup

Choosing the best reusable K cup is the smart choice. If you must, keep the conventional pods for random occasions. For your regular coffee, shift to reusable pods for stronger, better-tasting drinks. If you need more incentive — reusable cups are significantly easier on the pocket.
